Frequently Asked Questions
Structured Cabling FAQ — San Francisco
How much does structured cabling installation cost in San Francisco?
Structured cabling costs in San Francisco typically range from $125–$250 per drop installed, depending on the cable category (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A), building construction type, run length, and access conditions. A typical 20-drop office installation runs $2,500–$5,000 fully installed and certified. Larger installs (50–300 drops) are more efficient and cost less per drop.
Factors that affect pricing in SF specifically include ceiling type (open vs. drop ceiling vs. drywall), building permit requirements, after-hours scheduling requirements, and whether a telecom room buildout is needed. We provide fixed-price quotes after a free site survey — no hourly rates and no open-ended estimates.
Do I need a licensed contractor for cabling in San Francisco?
Yes. In California, any structured cabling work in a commercial building requires a C-7 Low Voltage Contractor License issued by the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Working without a license is illegal, can void your building permits, and may result in the work needing to be torn out and redone.
Our California C-7 license number is #1234567 — verifiable at the CSLB website. We carry full commercial liability insurance and workers’ compensation as required by California law.
How long does a structured cabling installation take?
Most San Francisco office installations are completed in 1–5 days depending on drop count and building complexity. A 20–30 drop single-floor office typically takes 1–2 days. A 100–200 drop multi-floor installation takes 3–5 days. Larger enterprise builds and data center projects are scoped and scheduled individually.
We can accommodate night and weekend work to reduce business disruption. We also do phased delivery — completing one floor or zone at a time — for occupied buildings that can’t have multiple days of cabling work happening simultaneously.
What is the difference between Cat6 and Cat6A for an SF office?
Cat6 supports 10 Gbps over runs up to 55 metres and 1 Gbps over 100 metres. It’s the right choice for the vast majority of San Francisco commercial offices — most desk-to-IDF runs are well under 55m, and 10G to the desktop is more than enough for current and near-future needs.
Cat6A supports full 10 Gbps all the way to 100 metres and also supports PoE++ (90W), which is required for high-powered WiFi 6/6E access points. If you’re deploying a modern wireless network in a large SF office or need 10G on longer runs, Cat6A is worth the modest upgrade cost. We typically recommend Cat6A for any run serving a wireless access point.
Do you pull permits for cabling work in San Francisco?
In most cases, low-voltage cabling work in San Francisco does not require a building permit for work inside an existing tenant space. However, permits may be required for penetrations through rated walls or floors, work in new construction, certain government or publicly-funded buildings, and work requiring conduit installation inside walls.
We assess permit requirements as part of our site survey and handle the permit process when needed. We work with SF DBI (Department of Building Inspection) and are familiar with the requirements across San Francisco’s various municipalities and jurisdictions.
What warranty do you offer on structured cabling installations?
All installations come with a 1-year workmanship warranty from SF Data Cabling. On qualifying installations using certified manufacturer cable and connectivity (Belden, CommScope, or Panduit), we can register an extended manufacturer channel warranty of up to 25 years — covering both materials and system performance.
The manufacturer warranty is product-backed and transferable to a new building owner, which can be a significant selling point for commercial property owners in San Francisco.
Can you install cabling in an occupied San Francisco office without disrupting our business?
Yes — this is one of the most common requests we handle in SF. We have extensive experience working in occupied commercial spaces with minimal disruption. Standard approaches include: evening and weekend installation, phased room-by-room delivery, temporary dust barriers during drywall core drilling, and coordinating with your IT team so network cutover happens at a planned time.
We’ve completed cabling installs in occupied law offices, live medical clinics, open-plan creative agencies, and operating retail stores across San Francisco without a single day of business interruption.
What areas of San Francisco do you serve?
We serve the entire San Francisco Bay Area, including the Financial District, SoMa, Mission District, Union Square, Civic Center, Mission Bay, the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville, Fremont), the Peninsula (San Mateo, Redwood City, Palo Alto, Burlingame), the South Bay (San Jose, Santa Clara, Mountain View, Sunnyvale), the North Bay (Marin, San Rafael, Novato), and all surrounding areas.
Our crews are SF-based, so we can respond quickly for site surveys and have no travel surcharges within the Bay Area.
